Fist Pumps

So I was thinking a great way for audience members to create their own experience (this is in response to the request that we all think about this after the last creative meeting at B-Bar...) would be to have them go through a series of rooms. Their objective in each room is to "win", opening a door (either all at once or in stages) and letting them into the next room. My idea is to have each room be based on a different sense, and they have to open the door by solving some clues based on that particular sense. So, for example, the one based on hearing: maybe a voice says "LISTEN!" as they enter the room. Then different voices give them clues, or sounds prompt them to act in certain ways, enabling them to open the door by performing whatever tasks they need to complete. The one based on sight could use written text, glowing rocks, etc. The one on touch could blah blah blah. You get it. Taste would be fun...

Updates/Upcoming Meetings/Production Scheduling

Hey!

Aytia|Matia II

I would like to have a creative meeting for the new show, tentatively titled "Ouros Boros," in which we flesh out the concepts and ideas members hae had over the recent weeks. Everybody's input is desired, as we begin to put the show into writing, and create our game plan for our experiments and eventual show. While details about spaces and dates for the Fall are at large, the biggest goal for the Spring regarding Aytia|Matia II is to create our fully defined and presentable product. With the depth of conceptual thinking here, we should be able to put ourseles in a good position to seek grants.

CREATIvE MEETING: Saturday Feb. 20 1:30 PM at B-BAR in Lower East Side (where we met Angela).

The two days in May, (and the week proceeding them), are going to be intense, so I'm working with Paul to work around Ben's schedule. The sooner the rehearsals for Ben are schedule firmly, the sooner we can get an accurate production schedule together for those two days.

LILLIAN

-Tomorrow, 4pm at Le Poisson Rouge (tech walkthrough).
-Ben and I meet about musicians and hiring begins.
-rehearsal schedule gets ironed out.

SYMPHO
-scheduling another tech walkthrough now for next week.
-once lighting and video get conceptually squared away, we can talk to Paul about projected budget on that end and get the ball rolling.

Again, I have not heard from anybody about our website. I assume we all have no problems?

Also, for company branding purposes, from now on please always spell Aytia|Matia with the vertical line, not the backslash.  (I know on the site its a back slash because the font didn't allow otherwise, but the logo will be the other way)

ITP PROGRAM

Hey guys, so below is a link to view a huge bey of innovative projects and designs from graduates of the ITP program in Tisch School of the Arts. For those of you who don't know, its a graduate degree program designed to foster the creative minds of some of the brightest young inventors. These projects are experiments and in some cases practical applications for everyday problems, and solutions in communication technology.

If you have the time or interest, please leave  a comment below with the projects you found most applicable and interesting to us as a group. Andrew and I will be contacting these folks over the next few weeks with respect to our future endeavors and how they can be involved.

VOILA

HEY everybody.

So I am excited to announce AytiaMatia.com. it has become official! The domain and host have been linked and in 72 hours AytiaMatia.com will be active. For now, you can see the website through our host's extension. Please take the time to explore it and see if you have any problems with it.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK YET:

-the paypal links and credit card system has not been activated so if you click it will not let you buy anything.
-I haven't set up the Private Sponsorship page yet.
-Ben's picture and bio are not there because I haven't received them.
-The "company" page will have the philosophy, which is not quite done but should be done in the next couple of days.

AND FINALLY (most importantly) A logo is being designed currently by a woman at 360Productions (the production company andrew works at).  On the upper left of the website, where it says aytia matia on each page, will be our logo. So that's a place holder.

Otherwise feel free to give feedback. Please use the Blog to make "comments" on the post.

THANKS,

LOVE,

GRAYSON

John Gilbert-IMPACT

Hey everybody, so here's a little bit of info about the program :

So John is a pretty well known individual in the University circuit because of his involvement with what people have now coined "Internet 2.0." Internet 2 has to do with the recent explosion of peer-to-peer networks, file-sharing, social networking, and digital communication. The work John has done have been experiments largely centered around simultaneous multimedia performances, across large distances. Because of the technology that increased data transfer speeds provide us, we are now able to execute recording sessions and performances with little latency issues.

The experiments he has done recently, involve colleges across the US where he gets a number of individuals on video chat clients, with cameras and projectors pointing in one hub at NYU. they can see one and other, and interact, while watching the same performance happen in the space. He has also done work with simultaneous improvisation projects coast-to-coast.

how does this help us?

Well, John was really blown away by our all-encompassing, conceptual approach to multimedia performance art. While he acknowledges that we didn't quite get there the first time, the ideas and focus were in the right place. Because of my connection to NYU, he sees this as a perfect opportunity to help us get the attention and publicity we need, because ultimately it will help NYU's PR as well. And we all know how much money Universities have....

His overall goal is to use this new technology to complement education and infuse technology into curriculum in a way that isn't forthright and transparent, but really changes how a student will approach a subject. He believes that since the emersion of Internet 2, people's minds have fundamentally shifted, and humanity will never be the same. This is true... children after our generation will be born into the Facebook/Txting Age, and eventually we will evolve to be dependent on it.

The project he has been working on for some years is called IMPACT. This program  happens every year at NYU and hosts a group of conservatory students from Korea, who while being surrounded by the highest technology in the world, and possessing music conservatory training, have never been taught to combine these worlds and use them to their advantage. The curriculum in Asia is still rigidly divided between disciplines, to the point that their music knowledge stops at 1910, and jumps straight to cheesy Asian pop.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE OTHER GUYS?!

John's goal, and apparently it amazingly well, is just to expose these students to multimedia collaboration, and send them back to Asia with a new awakening. Because of these relationships he has been fostering overseas, he now has a large network of people interested in working with him.

Over the last year, he has been drafting proposals and talking directly with Kevin Cunningham, artistic director of 3 Legged Dog. Apparently 3LD is in some financial trouble, so John has been working on a plan to get a $500,000 collaborative arts grant from Doris Duke, a foundation that specializes in supporting organizations working to fuse professional groups in education scenarios.  His idea, is that he gives all of this money to 3LD. In return, 3 legged dog works with NYU to take 2-4 groups that John proposes to them, and gives them the residency. These groups, will be assembled of the most creative minds he knows from around the world. (Africa, Europe, China, Korea...) and he'll assemble those people together into collectives and watch them create something.

We're already a group though, and since our number currently rides at 8 (which he thinks is the perfect number), he wants to help US get a residency. There are financial questions at bay, and I'm not sure all of the details yet, but this is why he wants to sit down and talk to everybody about it.

BUT WAIT! theres more!

Ideas like ours that really depend on getting into the audience's psyche, don't happen overnight. And when you're playing with big money, and opportunity, I don't think you can afford to blow it. So John wants to give us the opportunity to test our concepts and ideas over the course of a number of small experiments at NYU. He'll give us access to rooms there, or the brand new 5 million dollar recording studio wing of our music school, that has 5 big spaces linked up with fiber optics and projection systems. So we can test the idea of audiences unlocking the show, remote locations, interacting with strangers, or being secluded. Just tests. When we're ready, he tossed around the idea of us doing Aytia/Matia II in an NYU black box space for a 1 or 2 night run. Once we cover it really well, we'll have more bargaining power to command money in the future.

The final facet to all of this is his overall goal, and that is to archive this work in a way that has never been accomplished. The library of congress has been archiving buildings for awhile now. I had no idea what he was talking about, but apparently they have been archiving historic landmarks and buildings step by step with audio kind of like a 3D tour, but every square inch, every turn etc. These are what they and he call "tangible assets."  He wants to create archives of the final artistic work, "intangible assets," by getting every video angle, the best audio, perhaps 3D, and whatever else we can dream of. And with these archives, bring them to the classroom and open people's minds to how people like us think outside the box.

All very exciting! So if everybody is interested, I'd love for him to get to speak to any or all of you about this.

For those of you who haven't read up on the residency, below is the link

Website

Hey guys, just wanted you to know that after this weekend we will have a website. Ben and I are designing it for a couple days. Rachelle if you could please forward us bios and everything so we can include those that would be great!

In other news, I have begun dialogue with John Gilbert and we will be discussing how we can put on the first major technological performance in transcendence of time. (ie using timezones, performing at the same time as some people performing tomorrow, but in the same performance.)

Keep on keepin' on!
