"The Construct"
Definitions
(general)
The Construct (ouroboros)
• the physical space where the show takes place
• the overall form encompassing the various conceptual elements of the piece
Players (pawns)
• the audience members
Staff (norms)
• A|M crew members visible to the audience; ticket taker, ushers etc.
Agents (spooks)
• A|M crew members; actors posing as audience members
• phase #1 : engage and directly observe the audience, make connection
• phase #3 : initiate triggering actions, lead the interactive part of the performance
Watchers (game masters)
• behind the scenes A|M crew members
• phase #1 : remotely observe the audience & gather data
• phase #3 : operate the audio, video, and lighting systems, trigger events
The Game (mind game)
• the process of analyzing the audience and guiding them through The Construct
• all A|M crew members are actively involved in the game
The Program (algorithm)
• set of rules applied to the data in order to evaluate the behavior of the audience
• the actual computer program which process the data
The Index (program input)
• numbered list identifying individual audience members
• a checklist used to notate character traits and reactions to specific situations
The Playbill (program output)
• a list assigning individual audience members various roles
• predictions about behavior in phase #3 based on the processed data from phase #1
The Puzzle (part 1 of phase #3)
• a sequence of A/V/LX events which are 'triggered' by the actions of the audience
Module (puzzle piece)
• an audio / video / lighting element or event
• the building blocks of the The Puzzle
Trigger (key)
• a movement or gesture that, when observed by an operator, acts a cue for an event
• an action which 'unlocks' or activates an A/V/LX element or event
Breakpoint (solution)
• the moment when the all the A/V/LX elements have been activated
• cue for the final performance to begin
The Dance (part 2 of phase #3)
• interactive performance with dancers & musicians, the grand finale
(the 3 phases)
The Dish (petri dish)
• holding / staging area where phase #1 takes place
• audience members are assigned a number corresponding to one of three queues
• Players are subtly maneuvered into specific social situations & their reactions noted
The Void (tunnel of alienation)
• dark / foggy / noisy corridor where phase #2 takes place
• audience members are separated / isolated, a recorded voice explains The Puzzle
• Agents break away from the Players to study The Index
The Dome (colosseum)
• large space where phase #3 takes place, divided into 3 areas with a center stage
• guided by the Agents the Players unlock The Puzzle and join in The Dance
